My name is Margrét Hjaltested, and I am a freelance violist, teacher and project manager. Born in Iceland, I currently split my time between New York City, Reykjavík and Lubec, Maine. I have been a part of the vibrant and joyous amateur/adult music community for the past 30 years, serving as a teacher, coach, and string coordinator. While my work has primarily been in NYC and rural Maine, it has also taken me throughout the US, Canada, Europe and the Far East.
I maintain a private violin/viola studio for adults in NYC, welcoming both beginners and seasoned players. I offer individual violin/viola lessons and chamber music coaching at all levels, available both in-person and online. I was on the faculty at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College for 25 years and SummerKeys in Lubec, Maine.
As a multifaceted musician, I have enjoyed a diverse career as an orchestra player, chamber musician, and recitalist. I have also created and produced numerous artistic and educational projects and events. I hold a Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School, a Master of Music from Mannes College of Music, and a Master of Creative Management from Bifröst University, Iceland. I am a proud member of the American Federation of Musicians (Local 802 AFM).
