Background & Offerings

Michelle Falcon is a professional viola player and is Co-Director of Bath Strings Academy alongside Ruth O'Shea, fellow Co-Director and violinist. As musicians we are passionate about the playing and teaching of chamber music. We run weekend courses for adult chamber players and independent coaching sessions for pre-formed groups. All profits go towards supporting our education programmes and bursary fund for young musicians enabling players of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to benefit from inspiring musical experiences.

"Many thanks for such an inspiring day at Rudge Hall! The coaching was useful, supportive and effective (I hope!), offering new techniques and ways of perceiving the phrasing and bowing. An altogether enjoyable day which left me feeling energised and wanting to do more!" Participant on Adult Chamber One-Day Retreat

As coaches Michelle and Ruth have a wealth of experience, having performed and taught chamber music alongside the likes of Nick Roberts, James Dickenson and Nick Stringfellow.

Michelle studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama with Lucy Gould, and holds a post-graduate certificate in violin performance as well as Licentiate Diploma on viola. As a viola soloist, Michelle has performed several solo recitals and concerti with orchestras across the UK. Professional work has included tours across Europe and China with several orchestras including the London Arte Chamber Orchestra. In addition she has received coaching from world class players such as the Endellion, Martinu and Belcea String Quartets.

Ruth studied violin with Eta Cohen, Benedict Holland, Peter Maslin and Dennis Simons. She holds an ABRSM Licentiate Degree in violin performance and enjoys a varied musical career as teacher, soloist, chamber musician and orchestral violinist. In 2014, Ruth spent a year in San Francisco studying the teaching methods of Suzuki teachers, Donna Lim and Cathryn Lee. She regularly attends conferences and training events, including as a National Youth Orchestra Inspire Programme CPD Tutor.

"Michelle, we thoroughly enjoyed our coaching session with you. Your technical bowing tips were illuminating. You were able to put us all at ease and we really appreciated your skill in doing so."
