Faculty: Mitchell Lyon, George Meyer
Take a journey through Appalachia, Scotland, Ireland, and Scandinavia in this six-week course exploring a rich landscape of folk styles. Students will learn tune melodies, idiomatic use of the bow and the left hand, and accompaniment techniques. Each class will combine hands-on learning and instruction with historical context and background for a well-rounded introduction to each musical tradition. The class will guide students through the process of learning by ear and prepare participants for future self-study or connection to fiddle communities in NYC and beyond.
This class is intended for string instrument players, including violin, viola and cello, but all instruments are welcome. Applicants must be comfortable on their instrument and willing to explore learning by ear.
