About the Play-In

Most chamber music rehearsals focus on getting through the notes. This play-in explores what makes the music actually come alive.

In a small, collaborative setting, we’ll work intensely on one or two short passages submitted by participating ensembles, exploring timing, motion, balance, articulation, pacing, and musical function to discover why some performances feel merely accurate while others become emotionally powerful and unforgettable.

We’ll use the detailed musical methods top chamber musicians and conductors quietly spend enormous amounts of focused time on, but most musicians rarely get the chance to explore directly and collaboratively.

Participants should submit a short passage they are actively rehearsing or performing themselves. String quartets, string trios, piano + instrument duos, and other pre-formed chamber groups are especially encouraged. Selected ensembles participate free of charge.

This is not a lecture or score-analysis event. We will play, listen, adjust, compare, experiment, and explore together in real time.

Led by Paul Smith, founder of Symphonic Laboratory. Paul studied conducting at Curtis and worked directly with Leonard Bernstein and Sergiu Celibidache, exploring how musicians create coherence, motion, and deeply affecting musical experiences in live performance.
