About the Workshop

The Manhattan String Quartet continues its European cultural expeditions, this year to Vienna in commemoration of 200 years since Beethoven’s passing. These trips for string quartet players explore the cultural contexts of beloved works of chamber music. This year we will scale the heights of the string quartet repertoire, tackling Beethoven’s late quartet, Opus 127 in E-flat major. Through coachings, concerts and group tours we will deepen our understanding of Beethoven’s life and music. One highlight of the tour will be a visit to Beethoven’s summer residence in Heiligenstadt, where he wrote his 2nd Symphony as well as the famed “Heiligenstadt Testament”, a letter to his brothers revealing his encroaching deafness.

We welcome preformed quartets as well as individual players, who will be grouped on a daily basis. These will all be coached by the Manhattan String Quartet. We also invite friends and family of our musicians, “cultural aficionados”, to join us.
