As we celebrate Maurice Ravel at 150, learn how to tackle some of the challenges in his chamber music!
How many times have you heard the phrase ” Just Play Together!!” from a coach or a colleague, and then thought, “how do I do that”? How can we better “play together”? How do we feel a phrase together? How do we do rubato together? How can we do a ritard or accelerando “together”?
Using Ravel’s String Quartet as a template, violinist and chamber music coach Cal Wiersma will lead a class on rehearsal techniques to find group pulse, play freely and with rubato and phrasing.
In this cross between a master class and lecture, Cal Wiersma will be joined by a string quartet of ACMP members: Lori Horowitz, Corinna da Fonseca Wollheim, Jeff Chasnow, and Ben Pfeifer. Together they will explore a quartet full of these challenges, the Ravel String Quartet, and share rehearsal techniques, playing strategies, and ways of thinking that will help us all play better together!
You will come away with some inspiration, and new tools for tackling this difficult yet so rewarding chamber music yourself.
