Warmikuna Cocina in Cuenca, Ecuador, is known for Andean specialties like coconut shrimp with quinoa and crisp platanos. On a recent evening, the ambiance was complemented by music performed by Jhomayra Cevallos (violin) and Julio Peralta (viola). The program, “A palette of Latin and Italian musical flavors” included works by Ponce, Manfredini and Carlos Gardel.
Jhomayra and Julio, part of the lively chamber music scene in Cuenca, are the newest members of the ACMP in Ecuador. The country has a growing presence in the ACMP through the efforts of long-time ACMP member Tom Cappaert (cello), whose work in Latin America began as principal cellist of the National Symphony. Tom now regularly visits Ecuador to teach and perform (and recruit new members) in Cuenca, Riobamba, and Quito.
