On January 17, 2026, 45 chamber musicians, ages 23-80, met at Portland State University’s Music School Hall in Portland, Oregon to play musical chairs– a day of rotating groups and pieces, from Scarlatti’s Sonata for Mixed Strings & Woodwinds, to Bruch’s challenging Octet, to Morton Gould’s Benny’s Gig for Bass & Clarinet.
Though we’ve held three Play-Ins a year for 17 years, we continue to grow: our first horn player, finally allowing woodwind quintets, and our first 4-handed piano chamber piece.
As usual we gave 2 awards–
The Who is THAT Composer?! Award won for Brahms contemporary, Hermann Berens.
And the Who Asked The Most Fellow Players for Follow-up Play Dates Award.
(The winner made 7).
