The 92nd Street Y School of Music is excited to welcome new string and wind players for its Friday morning Chamber Music sessions. The 15-week Fall semester begins on February 4, 2022 and ends on May 20, 2022. Sessions take place every Friday (except holidays) from 10am to 12 noon. Participants will sight read and work on music from the Classical repertoire in an informal, supportive and friendly environment. Ensembles will receive a minimum amount of coaching, and a performance will follow the Spring semester, in late May, for those who wish to perform. Program director Ruth Spencer writes:
“As far as I know, this is the only Chamber Music program of its kind, where people can come weekly, play with other people and do a lot of sight reading. I’ve had visitors from the Royal Conservatory in Toronto and also from Berkeley come and consult with me as to how they could get such a program going. Both were unsuccessful.”
Meanwhile, some of you may have heard about this program in the New York Times, in the context of a wonderful article, It’s Never Too Late to Play the Cello, about ACMP member Vera Jiji. If you missed this inspiring article from July 20, 2021, you can read it here.
If any of you know of any similar chamber music programs in your area, please email me at sgriffin@acmp.net and let me know!
